Things to do when camping in Bouches-du-Rhone
With activities and experiences to suit all types of outdoor escapes, a camping holiday in Bouches-du-Rhone can be as action-packed or relaxing as you’d like. An excellent destination for young families or couples, this delightful department will leave you eager for more.
Despite our resorts occupying gorgeous settings in the heartland of the department, it’s worth taking the time to visit the shores of Bouches-du-Rhone. Wake early and head for the coast, where brilliant beaches of the Mediterranean Sea are generously blessed with hours and hours of sunshine. Our recommendation for a sweltering seaside sojourn are Crin Blanc in Saintes Maries de la Mer, Grande Mer Beach in Cassis and Bonneveine Beach in Marseille.
Whilst also featuring a few nice beaches, the Camargue national park’s main highlights are the famous pink flamingos, wild white horses and black bulls that make their home in this beautiful area of wetland, woodland and lakes. Visitors to the park typically explore the sprawling terrain by walking, horse riding or cycling, and enjoy stopping by one or more of the pretty villages on their route.
Extending between Cassis and Marseille, the Calanques National Park are considered to be a natural wonder, due in no small part to its stunning sea cliffs, charming coves and enviable emerald green sea waters. For an interesting perspective, Calanques can be reached by boat or sea kayak. Alternatively, walkers and hikers may prefer to explore the park on foot.
A more modest national park, Alpilles features blossoming fields of flowers, aromatic groves of citrus and the regiment of vineyards. With a flat terrain, the park is a great place in which to enjoy a cycling trip or an easy-going walking expedition.
In the heart of the department, several fairy tale villages whisk visitors back in time and inspire with their charm, cobbled streets and old buildings. Lovely Provençal villages number many in Bouches-du-Rhone but we would recommend a visit to Baux-de-Provence, Noves or Fontvieille. In the north of the department, simply crossing the river Durance places you in the gorgeous Luberon, where yet more quaint villages await alongside lavender fields and the Provencal Colorado.
In Marseille, holidaymakers can enjoy great shopping and eating experiences before or after taking in the city’s best attractions. Our recommendations for things to do in Marseille are the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, the Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean, the Old Port and the Palais Longchamp Grand Park.
