Things to do when camping in Eure

With a green and picturesque countryside that can rival anywhere else in the country, and a multitude of nostalgia inducing villages and towns, the beloved holiday destination of Eure rewards visitors with various activities. In the department, you can enjoy the captivating countryside one day and explore alluring villages and towns the next.

Campers who take great pleasure for embracing nature will feel right at home in the beautiful sprawling woodlands of the Lyons Forest, one of France’s prettiest beech groves. Situated near the village of Lyons-la-Forêt, the expansive woodland covers over 10,000 hectares of Eure and features a network of walking trails and cycling paths.

The Norman Seine River Meanders Regional Nature Park, which spills over into neighbouring Seine-Maritime, features green pastureland, traditional farm buildings and pretty hamlets, as well as the meandering bends of the River Seine. Best explored on foot or by bicycle, the nature reserve’s standout sightseeing opportunities include the Clog Maker’s House and the House of Apples.

An extensive area of peat bog known as the Vernier Marsh can be found in the heart of the Norman Seine River Meanders Regional Nature Park. This amphitheatre of biodiversity features an abundance of interesting flora and fauna, as well as roaming highland cattle and traditional thatched houses and farm buildings.

Vying with the captivating countryside for the attention of holidaymakers, the quaint hamlets, villages and towns of Eure emerge gracefully from the green landscapes. The capital of the department is Évreux, an interesting city dominated by gothic architecture and featuring numerous tourist attractions such as the Cathedral of Our Lady and the Church of St. Taurinus. For a day trip to smaller townships in the department, consider planning some time exploring the streets of Vernon, Pont-Audemer, Vieux-Port and Les Andelys.

The highlight of a camping holiday in Eure, particularly if you love art, would be trip to the splendid House of Claude Monet. Take a tour of the house that also includes walking through the impressionist painter's stunning waterlily studio and gorgeous water gardens. The house is located in Giverny, which is also home to Museum of Impressionism and Chateau de Bizy.

Several other sightseeing opportunities are available in Eure, especially visiting a series of historical buildings such as de Bataille Castle, Bec-Hellouin Abbey, Harcourt Arboretum, Beaumesnil Castle and Vascoeuil Castle.
