Things to do when camping in Haut-Rhin

With carefully preserved cultural attractions and marvellous nature, a camping holiday in Haut-Rhin will be filled with amazing adventures in the outdoors and truly magical sightseeing opportunities in the department’s towns and villages.

Offering stunning views and panoramas, the peaks in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park is a paradise for lovers of hiking, walking or biking. From the picturesque summits of the Grand Ballon, the park’s highest apex, and the popular Hohneck, visitors can appreciate a landscape of green rolling valleys and woodland. With 14 mountain peaks to choose from or countless trails to enjoy on foot, bicycle or horseback, the possibilities are endless.

Providing a scenic place to stroll, the shores of the aptly named Green Lake, White Lake and Black Lake are lined with pretty forests and foothills. For a multitude of captivating flora and fauna, consider a day trip to the lovely Nature Reserve of the Petite Camargue in the south of the department.

Whilst the countryside of the Haut-Rhin offers so much drama, there is no shortage of theatre in the charming towns, villages and hamlets of the department. With the ability to inspire and intrigue in equally measure, the towns of character more than merit a day trip.

One of the most famous towns in the department, Colmar is popular with visitors hoping to experience the charm of “Little Venice”. The town of half-timbered houses and flower-lined bridges also features several notable places of interest such as the covered market, Dominican Convent and Unterlinden museum.

The commune of Riquewihr more than matches Colmar in the charm stakes, as this enchanting town features characterful streets and buildings along with tourist attractions such as the Tower Museum of Thieves, the Upper Door and the Butterfly Gardens. Riquewihr lies on the famous Haut-Rhin wine trail and is an ideal base for exploring the nearby castle and gardens of Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg.

Kayersberg, Eguisheim and Ribeauvillé are among the best alternatives to Colmar and Riquewihr, while the fascinating open-air Alsace Heritage Museum is a great place to learn about the history, heritage and culture of Alsace.

There are plenty more things to do if you are planning an itinerary while visiting Haut-Rhin, including the brilliant Zoological and Botanical Park of Mulhouse, Château de Saint-Ulrich and the Cité du Train interactive museum.
