One of the most recognisable chateau in the department and spanning the Le Cher River, Chenonceau was constructed in the 16th century. The renaissance palace of Château de Villandry more than matches Chenonceau, and features a beautiful garden and amazing maze. To fully appreciate the history and heritage behind the building, it’s again recommended that visitors sign-up for one of the tours.
With a beautiful setting overlooking the Loire River, the characterful Château Royal d'Amboise features renaissance and gothic architecture, and has been home to many a French monarch. Packed with fine art, tapestries and no shortage of fascinating stories, the castle ranks among the best in the department.
With more than its fair share of castles and palaces, Indre-et-Loire has many more worth visiting if you have the time, namely Château du Clos Lucé, Château de Langeais, Château de Loches, Château de Montpoupon and Château de l'Islette.
Saint-Gatien Cathedral, the Beaux-Arts de Tours Museum and the cafe-lined Place Plumereau Square are some of the best places to visit in Tours, a lively town with good shopping and dining experiences. From the town of Chinon, campers with a love for wine can plan trips to local wineries and vineyards such as Domaine Couly-Dutheil, Pierre and Bertrand COULY or Domaine de Noiré.
