Things to do when camping in Lot

Simply put, there is a lot to do in Lot! The modestly sized department packs in so much captivating countryside and terrific towns, you’ll easily be able to fill your entire holiday with truly memorable experiences. Be at one with nature as you discover the delightful rural confines of Lot, featuring sprawling plateaus, blossoming fields, rivers, caves and marvellous chateaux.

Along with the river Lot, the famous meandering waters of the Dordogne cut through a small section of the department. From walking trips along the banks of both rivers, to kayaking and canoeing expeditions down the water, the Lot and Dordogne provide awesome aquatic pursuits.

The landscapes around the rivers are pure joy for lovers of the great outdoors, especially in the dramatic Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park. This stunning area of natural beauty is best explored by walking, cycling or on horseback. Prepare a hearty picnic lunch and enjoy eating it in the midst of charming countryside.

Breaking up the long stretches of rural terrain, the department’s fairy tale villages, towns and hamlets give visitors an insight into the culture and history of Lot. Known for its delicious red wine, Cahors other famous offerings are Diana’s Arch, Cahors Cathedral and Pont Valentré Bridge.

With breathtaking beauty, the hilltop town of Rocamadour seems to emerge naturally from the landscape. Explore the streets of this stunning town and stumble upon sightseeing opportunities at Église Saint-Sauveur de Rocamadour Basilica and Saint-Blaise. For kids, the Rocher des Aigles Bird Park and Monkey Park provide a nice little distraction.

Hidden beneath the surface, many of Lot’s most stirring sights lie in wait. In the Lacave Cavern, visitors can discover the limestone caves by underground train, while the expansive Padirac Caves feature a subterranean river. The Grottes préhistoriques de Cougnac Cave system stands out as a top historical site due to it’s captivating cave paints dating from prehistoric times.

On a camping holiday in Lot, as with many other French destinations, you’ll be able to visit one or more riveting castles and chateaux. Our recommendations include the castle of Montal, Château de Larroque-Toirac, Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux, Chateau Cenevieres, Château de Cabrerets and Castle Pannonia.

Whether you’ve camped in Lot before or have yet to holiday here, you’ll find so much to discover. One of the very best destinations in Midi-Pyrénées for history, culture and amazing nature, the department of Lot will leave you wanting more.
