Things to do when camping in Northern Portugal

Famous the world over for its wine, Porto is a many-faceted historical city. Head for La Ribeira to explore the oldest part of the city, and wander through its little, paved streets and old houses. You will find numerous bars and restaurants there, together with famous wine cellars where you can taste port.

This district provides a magnificent view of the Douro and its bridges. You can also hop on board an antique 1920s tram for a journey back in time. Notable places of interest include Bolsa Palace, Livraria Lello Bookshop, Clérigos Church and Palácio de Cristal victorian gardens.

There are plenty of things for the kids to enjoy in Porto, namely the Gaia Biological Park, the World of Discoveries history museum, Porto Planetarium and Santo Inácio Zoo.

For outdoor acitivities, you should make some time for a trip through the Douro Valley. Scenic trails will lead you through the famous port-producing vineyards as well as lovely lakes, woodland and valleys.

Porto is not the only interesting site in northern Portugal. Head for Ponte de Lima, the oldest city in the country, which will bowl you over with its medieval charm. You can also visit the magnificent historical villages of Guimaraes, Braga and Viana do Castelo, which have a wealth of treasures.

Nature lovers can visit the Peneda Gerês or Montesinho national parks, with their breathtaking landscapes and marvellous walks.
