The Canal du Midi

Roque-Haute Nature Reserve
In the Roque-Haute nature reserve, an unspoiled area of 154 hectares, visitors can explore a beautiful landscapes that extends over an ancient volcano, between the towns of Vias and Portiragnes. This former basalt quarry is now made up of 215 temporary ponds typical of the Mediterranean rim, and is a refuge for several species of insects, reptiles and other wildlife, as well as numerous exceptional plant species. This particular site is intended to be respectful and can only accommodate 500 people per year, but a guided tour is definitely worth the trip.
